Passing the Torch

Passing the Torch - Lisa Williamson This is a «short» short story and when I got it from the author, she said it was in the “weird” genre/category. However, when I finished reading it I thought the words “surreal”, “mystery” and “dark” could be good tags for her work.

This is the kind of read which puts you to wonder more about the characters, the scenario, and makes grow a lot of “whys” in your head. I think it would be nice to have a bit more of extension to the story, but that’s because I am spoiled. I know the author wanted to narrate that short happening/passage and that’s the whole point about this short story/flash fiction.

The main character is a female spirit/soul condemned to pay for things she did when alive. The story narrates a passage of her every day in the afterlife!

I liked the mix of bizarre elements and atmosphere in there, but I had to read a couple of times to get it, although the story is also open to each person’s interpretation.

Very interesting, but not for those who like easy-reads. As a fan of bizarre and dark things I liked it a lot!

Surprises and Gifts

Surprises and Gifts - Lisa Williamson This is the second short story I read from this author, and it is also my favorite so far.

I associate this one with a classical fairytale as it has a knight as main character and he saves a VERY mysterious girl from a dragon. (Although I didn’t like much the part describing what the dragon was going to do with the girl and how she was found).

The story is a riddle and I really wonder who or “what” this girl saved by knight is. It is a well-balanced narrative, has simple and interesting sets and a good tempo.

Nice for those who appreciate Fantasy and Dark Fantasy genres in flash fiction or very short stories.

V for Vendetta

V for Vendetta - David Lloyd, Alan Moore Got this as a gift from my younger brother and I loved every aspect of it: the plot, which got me curious from the beginning to the end and also inspired me in many ways and nonetheless, the great artwork, both on the cover and internal pages.
A must-read for fans of classic adult comic books/graphic novels.

Essence Of A Dark Soul

Essence Of A Dark Soul - Faye Cross I am not much into Poetry and such, but been drawn to this book because of it's themes.

I always liked things with a dark atmosphere, gothic art / music and nonetheless, vampire stories an related works, much before it became a media fever.

This book is beautiful, obscure an the lyrical subject makes it very interesting. I liked very much the romantic tone in some of the poems.

It is short, but inspiring!

Norse Mythology: A Guide to Gods, Heroes, Rituals, and Beliefs

Norse Mythology: A Guide to Gods, Heroes, Rituals, and Beliefs - John Lindow Great book for researching on these subjects! :)

The XIIIth hour at Duskland (Stories of Duskland)

The XIIIth hour at Duskland (Stories of Duskland) - Isis Sousa, Isis Sousa The XIIIth Hour at Duskland is an introductory short story to my upcoming illustrated anthology Stories of Duskland.

This first work was published in advance as a way for me to experiment and experience what is like to publish a fiction work. It was published so I could learn about the market, improve my writings and understand what motivates fans of Dark Fiction.

While I am finishing the short stories for “Stories of Duskland”, I present its main characters Leonard, Elisa, Dr. Charles, Giorgio, Gerania and Iphigenia to you.

The XIIIth Hour at Duskland was written directly in English, rather in my primary language, Portuguese, so much of the story wouldn’t be lost in translation.

The 2nd Edition is professionally edited, and I counted with the help of great beta readers to help enhancing the read!

I invite you to know the mystery behind Leonhard’s beautiful guest. Would you dare take this trip? There’s so much more than what meets the eye…

The Rainbow Stick Boy

The Rainbow Stick Boy - Michael Santolini 5 stars for the lovely story, creative illustrations and beautiful design!

Michael Santolini’s book is wonderful! It is a book for both children and parents, and I would complete saying it is highly recommended for teachers as well.

The whole story is about being “different” in a society where everybody else is alike in appearance and behavior. Huey, the main character is rejected and ridiculed because he is this “different” person. He even tries to imitate the others in order to be accepted, without success, of course.

Until a pretty day, something extraordinary happens to that society and that dramatic event help them changing their mindset. Now, Huey and his new friend, who was also an outsider, are accepted, respected and understood.

In the end we have a beautiful message which tells us, even though a person is “different” on the outside, he/she can be wonderful in the inside. It is the classical idea that what really tells is what you really are rather than what you look like.

Now, the best and coziest part of the book is indeed the lovely illustrations made by Santolini himself! They are carefully made of Wikistyx (play dough?). They made my imagination take off and I was truly embedded in that imaginative world of sweet forms and colors.

The layout and design is very fun and easy to read. Looks very attractive for the audience. Definitely a book that is pleasant to hold, look at and learn from the meaningful story and unique illustrations.

High Witch (High Witch, #1)

High Witch (High Witch, #1) - Mona Hanna High Witch is a novella Fantasy Romance written by the Australian author [a:Mona Hanna|4756190|Mona Hanna|http://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1335716665p2/4756190.jpg]. It is a book with an interesting story: it has magic, action, adventure and love, lots of love. The main characters are Brayden and Ariel, a young couple in their mid-twenties. They fall deeply in love for each other and find themselves in one of the biggest and most dangerous adventures in their lives.

They love grow stronger as they have to overcome fear and a lot of difficulties in their way. All because of a dark warlock, Julius, who has diabolical plans regarding the future of Ariel, the High Witch herself.

Despite all the pain, nothing can defeat the love Brayden, a very conscious and respectful your man nurtures for Ariel; as well as the love she nurtures for him, the one who helped her learning and controlling her magic powers.

As a novella has a short length, we can’t expect much description of the characters or environments, and everything has to go in a faster pace. I feel that if this was a more extensive work, it would have been really nice to have learned more about Brayden and Ariel. There’s so much more about what make their personalities I would like to understand. Anyway, we will surely know more by the next book.

The plot feels like happening a bit fast in the very beginning of book, that’s when Ariel and Brayden meet and get to know each other. After that, when they get entwined, action starts to unfold and things get more exciting. In the end there is a lot of tension, action and conflict, by the time Ariel is going through “The Test”.

The book, which I must mention has a lovely cover, ends with a beautiful, happy and peaceful scene. Ariel and Brayden are now bonded until death tears them apart. They are meant to live in happiness forever after, but will they?

I am looking forward to know what Mona Hanna have prepared for them in the next book…

Selling Graphic and Web Design

Selling Graphic and Web Design - Donald Sparkman The book is not so bad, but I find it very dry to read and absorb its content. Also, I feel like it has too much text and too little useful information.

Inside The Business Of Graphic Design

Inside the Business of Graphic Design: 60 Leaders Share Their Secrets of Success - Catharine M. Fishel Very nice, because it has stories of successful people and studios. It has many insights and useful info. So it gave me great ideas. However, it has a horrible design!!!! ;)

ZBrush Character Creation: Advanced Digital Sculpting

ZBrush Character Creation: Advanced Digital Sculpting - Scott Spencer I think, in first place that this book is ver well written. The author has chosen important points to think and learn about when you're a 3D sculptor. I am a 2D artist, who is interestd in 3D, and I could learn things right from the first pages of this book and have a practical use for them.

Also have learned things which helped me to enhance my 2D art, like working with the subject's sihlouette and form!

Very interesting for both 3D and 2D artists!

Color Management: A Comprehensive Guide for Graphic Designers

Color Management: A Comprehensive Guide for Graphic Designers - John Drew, Sarah Meyer Very interesting, with lots of coll images. However, as mostly poeple say, it is very disorganized regardint the topics. It isn't practical but it has a lot of interesting theories and information.

Too complex, somehow, not a practical guide.

The Designer's Guide To Marketing And Pricing: How To Win Clients And What To Charge Them

The Designer's Guide To Marketing And Pricing: How To Win Clients And What To Charge Them - Ilise Benun This book is excellent. Very nice and important tips for designers and artists in general. It doesn't cover so much my current field (digital painting/Fantasy illustration), but it certainly gave me many insights and helped me become a better business person.
